Orange juice prices have risen

Bad news in this season of flu and colds: the price of oranges is on the rise because a below-normal harvest is expected this year due to the drought that hit the Unites States last summer and the recent frost in the plantations down in Florida.

The US, which is the second largest producer of oranges in the world after Brazil, will probably produce 10 to 15% less as compared to the last season.

For the moment, the price of orange juice has gone up in the Stock Exchange (40% increase since the end of September), but not in the stores yet. We’ll still have to wait a bit longer to find out what impact this increase will have on the consumer’s wallet.

A potential increase in orange juice prices would add to the increase that we are already witnessing in many food items. According to Statistics Canada, the cost of a basket of groceries increased by 4.8% in Canada and by 5.2% in Quebec over the last year.
